Last year, Goodnotes 5, the famous note-taking software for iPad, was updated to Goodnotes 6, and apart from switching from buyout to subscription, this blogger paid more attention to the smart exercise book feature of Goodnotes 6, which I didn't feel in 2023, but when I looked at it again this year, I realized that it's probably the prototype of the next-generation of e-books.
I'm going to explain why I think Goodnotes will be the next generation of eBooks by describing its interactive workbook feature.
What is an Interactive Exercise Book
Interactive Practice is a new set of features introduced in Goodnotes 6 that allows students to complete interactive practice problems in Goodnotes and provides a range of AI math assistance to help students solve the problems.
Using the Interactive Practice Book
First, to access Interactive Exam Practice, simply go to the Marketplace from the Marketplace tab in the Main Document View sidebar, then select the Education tab to see the Interactive Exam Practice "Then select the Education tab to see the Interactive Exam Practice option, under which you will find the manuscripts that are currently available to the public in Goodnotes' Interactive Exam Practice books. As of June 2024, Goodnotes offers interactive practice books for the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), American Advanced Level Examination (AALE), and Korean Advanced Level Examination (KALE), with roughly 1,000 questions in each book.

Clicking on an interactive workbook will take you to the introduction and download page. The blogger takes the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination as an example.

After downloading and importing into Goodnotes, clicking on the text will take you to the main page, which is equivalent to the cover page and table of contents page of a paper book.
- The top page shows the name of the exercise book, and the statistics of the study hours.
- At the bottom is the familiar table of contents, which is different from the traditional paper table of contents in that it supports folding and filtering.

After selecting the corresponding chapter in the table of contents, you can enter the "Brush Up" interface. This interface contains the following divisions:
- Question Area: Each chapter topic has several questions, such as the first question in the question area (a total of 5 questions) as shown
- Answer area: submit answers, show hints for solving the questions, and display the answers
- Draft paper area: in the lower part of this page, you have some draft paper on which you can write freely

When you have finished writing the question, the correct answer is displayed for comparison, and then you can record whether it is correct or not.

Summarizing
From the new feature of Goodnotes 6, the interactive exercise book, the blogger believes that it is not only the exercise book that can be so interactive, but all e-books should be so in the future. A book is a summary of the core wisdom of an author's own experience, and when reading a book, it's as if the author is "lecturing" to the reader, whereas a traditional eBook is just a paper book in an electronic device, and there's no difference between electronic and paper.
The function of the interactive exercise book makes the blogger think that if the e-book also adopts this kind of interaction, it will be even more like "the author is lecturing to the reader".
However, the blogger also thinks that interactive e-books will not be realized for a long time, Goodnotes claimed last year (2023) that it would cooperate with Chinese publishers to launch an interactive exercise book for the Chinese college entrance exam, but after a year nothing has happened, which shows that the problems that need to be solved for the interactive exercise book are not only the difficulty of making it, but also a lot of things that need to be solved, for example, the copyrights.
Even so, the blogger is still very optimistic about interactive exercise books, and also expects Goodnotes to open up the production of interactive exercise books, so that the public can customize their own exercises (although this is unlikely).
Other thoughts from the blogger
The blogger heard a long time ago that the math of the SAT is relatively easy compared to the Chinese college entrance exam, but after actually experiencing an exercise through the interactive exercise book on Goodnotes, he felt that the saying that Chinese students who take the SAT basically get perfect scores in math, science and chemistry should not be overblown, and that it shouldn't be difficult to brush up the questions properly.
